The brain is a complex organ and has at least three levels of functions that affect all aspects of our daily lives: interpretation of senses and control of movement; maintenance of cognitive, mental, and emotional processes; and maintenance of normal behaviour and social cognition. Brain health is about keeping your mind active, feeding it plenty of nutrients and oxygen, and reducing risk factors that can harm the brain. Unfortunately, there are lots of conditions that can impact brain health such as vascular diseases, degenerative diseases, brain tissue injuries, inflammation, mental health etc.

Neurological disorders have become a major health concerns as they are the leading cause of disability and second leading cause of deaths worldwide. About 30 million people in India suffer from various forms of neurological diseases and the average prevalence rate is as high as 2,394 patients per 1,00,000 of the population. Neurological disorders have a devastating effect on patients. Certain conditions have social stigma which serves as a major obstacle in identification, management and treatment of the patients.

A healthy brain is essential for living a long and full life.

6 factors that contribute to a healthy brain are:

- Regular physical and mental exercise which slows age- related brain deterioration.

- Sound sleep of 7-8 hours is the key to brain health.

- Healthy, hygienic and safe environment and surroundings

- A balanced diet including variety of fruits, vegetables, proteins and whole grains.

- Avoid brain damaging habits like smoking and tobacco consumption.

- Availability and accessibility of proper healthcare.

Symptoms like chronic headache, back pain, neck pain, memory problem, numbness, sleep issues or vision problems should not be ignored. If you have doubt that you or any of your acquaintance may be suffering from any of these symptoms, then you must visit the best neurologist. Early detection and prevention is always the best option to cope with neurological disorders.

People must keep in mind that not all neurological disorders are fatal. Depending on the patient and specific circumstances, someone living with a neurological disorder with the help of proper medical guidance may be able to live a long and happy life.
