Diabetes in children and teens- Know why?

Diabetes usually occurs when our body isn’t able to take up sugar (glucose) into its cells & use it for energy. This results building up of extra sugar in our bloodstream, eventually leading to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys & nerves.

People can develop Type 1 diabetes at any age, from childhood to adulthood but the average age of diagnosis is 13 years. Type 1 diabetes occurs when our body mistakenly attacks healthy body tissues. Leaving our beta cells in the pancreas unable to secret any insulin.

Whereas Type 2 diabetes causes have been fully our own lifestyle decisions. Our physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and overall ignorance of proper health.

Type 2 diabetes is getting common in people of a younger age due to the problem of an inactive lifestyle, and overweight issues.

Important Lifestyle Changes Young Children and Teens Should Adopt

By consulting and taking advice from their doctor, young people can manage their diabetes, by focusing on changes in lifestyle.

Eat Healthily

Eating healthy is crucial for any age eventually. What we eat affects our blood sugar. Focus on eating as much as your body needs, having plenty of vegetables, fruits & whole grains. Always go for non-fat dairy & lean meat, and limit the food which is high in sugar and fat. Ultimately try to keep a healthy diet overall.

Exercise

Being active doesn’t mean to be pumping daily at the gym. Being active means giving your body the minimum needed movement. This can be fulfilled by various means. Walking, running, sports, cycling, or through many more activities. Maintaining a daily exercise routine will definitely help young people to reduce the chances of getting prone to diabetes by helping their body to regulate body sugar in a better way.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is the scarcest thing for people in today’s age and time. Various factors of current times have made it normal for people to cut down on their sleeping time. Children and teens with their hectic schedule of academics and other activities, usually get less sleep. This has had a major negative and direct effect on people becoming prone to diabetes.

With no proper sleep, our body doesn’t function to its most optimum level. And when our body fails to function, a load of diseases becomes threatening to our life. Thus regulate sleeping patterns and get enough sleep to function well.

Diabetes if undiagnosed for a long time tends to cause worsening symptoms over the period. Chronically high blood sugar levels can cause more damage to your tissues and organs. It’s hard to recognize these warning signs in the beginning if they’re mild.
