5 easy steps to keep Diabetes under control

In India, 1 in every 8 adults is living with diabetes. This is expected to grow manifold over the years. The common  cause is blood sugar levels fluctuating from normal. There can be various causes for this- weak immune system, genetic factors, or the lifestyle followed.

No matter what the type and cause, Diabetes leads to long-term complications in our body and gradually weakens it. It can lead to nerve damage, heart disease, and even kidney damage. Once detected, Diabetes can’t be done away with, but it can surely be controlled.

The key to it lies in making some simple lifestyle changes, which we will explore further.

Choose a healthy diet

A combination of fiber, protein and the right amount of carbs is what constitutes the preferred diet. These foods lower the absorption of sugar, which in turn prevents the glucose level from rising. Consumption of food high in starch, for example - potato and rice should be avoided.

Learn to de-stress

One of the main reasons for fluctuation in sugar levels is stress. Activities that help reduce stress are paramount for someone with diabetes. These include- meditation, yoga, gardening, or even practicing a hobby.

Level up your liquid game

Drinking the right amount of water has multiple benefits. Along with others, it also helps in keeping our glucose level in check. With the consumption of water, the excess blood sugar is diluted. This ultimately leads to optimum glucose concentration. Juices however should be avoided.

Be active

Walking even for 20 minutes a day is a great start. The goal should be to be more active. This can slowly be accompanied by yoga or aerobics. Exercises are effective in increasing insulin sensitivity. This means, our body needs less insulin to regulate blood sugar levels.

Cut down on processed food

Highly processed foods contain added sugar, unhealthy fat, and even more than required preservatives. According to a study, diets high in processed food increased the risk of diabetes by 30%. Substituting them with whole foods like nuts, and vegetables are far more effective in controlling diabetes.

Apart from the above-mentioned steps, visiting the specialist and getting routine care is of utmost importance. It is true that we ourselves are our health keepers, but a little assistance does no wrong.

Following the doctor's advice, keeping a track of your sugar levels, and incorporating certain lifestyle changes will help you to keep your glucose level to the optimum.
